I couldn’t have planned for a better follow up post than this, a piece by Mary Norris, Query Proofreader at The New Yorker on her “learning to love the [magazine’s] house style.” Beautifully written and itself exemplifying the nuances of The New Yorker‘s house style, Norris’s piece delves into the history behind some of the stylistic choices of the magazine, and her own struggles with them. It’s a worthy read, especially for those in need of an example of how to make a potentially dry subject engaging. Norris does so by weaving personal history alongside New Yorker history alongside grammar rules; showing, not telling; and making the case for caring about presentation.
