Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Sherlock Holmes Enthusiast – The New Yorker

The writer Kareem Abdul-Jabbar (yes, also the basketball great!) has a new book coming out.  Mycroft Holmes focuses on the shadowy older brother of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s iconic detective.  If you like the crime fiction genre then this tale might be for you!  Check out the profile on Abdul-Jabbar and Mycroft Holmes in the February 2, 2015 edition of The New Yorker by clicking the link below.   It’s a great piece of writing, exemplifying one style we often teach in our composition classes:  the profile essay.  Note how the author, Jonathan Blitzer, seamlessly integrates background information about Abdul-Jabbar and his fellow Sherlockians, with the effect of enhancing the credibility of Abdul-Jabbar as an expert on Holmes.  At the same time, readers get to experience the Yale Club as they witness second-hand the aura of mystery that surrounds a meeting of the Baker Street Irregulars, a Sherlock Holmes society.  Thanks, Blitzer, for adding another book to my list of must-reads!
